College life includes classes, activities, friends, and new experiences, but when those experiences include pregnancy, it can make college life a little more challenging. Pregnancy can make you feel isolated, and the nausea and fatigue can make studying harder.
Not to worry, though. Title IX protects you from discrimination and harassment. It ensures you can succeed academically.
The caring advocates at Embrace also want you to know you are not alone. Turn to us for the help you need.
What Is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal law that prohibits discrimination based on pregnancy or parenting status in educational institutions. It entitles you to the following:
- The ability to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities without discrimination.
- The school must honor excused absences prescribed by your healthcare professional regarding pregnancy or childbirth.
- You can return to class with the same academic and extracurricular status.
- Your professors must allow you to complete missed work.
- The school must protect you from any harassment.
- Special accommodations must be provided, such as a larger desk, more bathroom breaks, and access to the elevators.
Know your rights by reading Title IX thoroughly and speaking with your college’s Title IX coordinator or counselor. If you are a Shocker attending Wichita State University, you can contact their office here.
Pregnancy cannot legally keep you from having equal educational opportunities.
