Is single parenting really for me? Can I still finish school? Will I have any support? How can I afford this? These are questions many women find themselves asking and they are nothing to be ashamed of. In 2018, 29% of families in Kansas were led by a single-parent and that percentage jumped to 39% for Wichita alone. It’s not going to be easy, but raising a child is worth the effort, and many have walked this path before you. Read on to find answers to some of your questions regarding being a single mom or dad. Can I Finish My Education?

The short answer is, yes! Whether you are in high school or pursuing your degree, you can still walk across that stage and obtain your diploma or degree. The journey may change from what you originally envisioned, but nothing is impossible! Take advantage of the resources around you and talk to your school counselor/college advisor about your options going forward. You may even consider transferring to an online education platform if you need to stay home with your new baby. Being a single parent while pursuing your education isn’t going to be a walk in the park, but it is absolutely doable.

What If I Already Dropped out?

No worries at all! Whether you’re getting your GED or finishing up a few credits for your college courses, it’s never too late to go back to school. What’s important is that you do what’s right for you and your family. Don’t let anyone make you feel like less of a mother for taking a break or waiting until you’re ready to go back. Take care of yourself. When the timing is right, you can always finish your education.

How Will I Afford Childcare?

This is honestly one of the most commonly asked questions among new moms. It’s an important one as well because often times childcare is not cheap. But before you lose hope, know that resources exist to help you succeed. At Embrace, we can provide you with community referrals and resources specific to childcare. For example, depending on your income level, you may qualify for child care assistance through DCF. Sometimes it’s just a matter of brainstorming your options as you might have a family member or close trusted friend who would be willing to help out. What If I Don’t Have Any Support?

It may feel like you don’t have any support, but you are never alone. Whether you just moved, changed your social circles, or experienced a break-up, there is always support around you. One great way to build lasting relationships and create a great social network is by getting involved in a local church. Find one through word of mouth, social media, or on the list provided at your free walk-in pregnancy appointment at Embrace.

You will never find a better support group than your church family. I know that I personally have made it through circumstances that I may not have been able to do alone. Within a church, you can build friendships and gain support during difficult times.

The staff at Embrace are here to help as well. Whether you need medical insurance information, a referral for mental health support, material assistance, or just someone to talk to, we are here for you. Many clients also enjoy the community aspect of our free parenting classes to build relationships with other moms.
